For youth to be actively engaged in mental health and/or substance use services, individuals who are providing the treatment must be open to adapting their approach for this age group. Awareness of the unique developmental needs of youth, cultural background considerations, and individual experiences are key to tailoring approaches and addressing specific concerns. This webinar will describe ways to create a safe and supportive environment, develop authentic connections, and present treatment services in a way that is youth-friendly and works to overcome barriers to engagement.

Objectives:

1. Identify specific developmental needs and preferences of youth
2. Explore practical ways to create safe, youth-friendly environments that encourage engagement
3. Discuss adaptive approaches to build trust, decrease barriers, and use interactive strategies to engage youth in services

This webinar is designed for behavioral health practitioners, clinicians, professionals serving youth or young adults, program managers and supervisors, and executives in behavioral health agencies, Managing Entities, and Department of Children and Families program staff.

Presented by:

Ashley M. Shonibare, LCSW, specializes in working with young people – particularly those experiencing early mental health symptoms or seeking therapeutic intervention for the first time. Ashley currently provides trauma-informed treatment at a Chicago hospital and, in her spare time, offers training to organizations on how to decrease compassion fatigue and normalize mental health treatment for healthcare colleagues.

As a former team leader of a Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) Team for Early Psychosis, Ashley engaged in preventative work and crisis intervention using a strength-based approach to help youth, young adults, and their families create more sustainable, healthy, and adaptive patterns. A graduate of Michigan State University, Ashley’s career has focused on community mental health and working with underserved populations, promoting rural mental health services, engaging youth in residential settings, and collaborating with families involved in court-mandated services.
