Research indicates that early marijuana use can cause neuropsychological and neurodevelopmental decline, poor school performance, increased school drop-out rates, increased risk for psychotic disorders, depression, and suicidal ideation and behavior among youth (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2021). As policy and legalization efforts evolve, stakeholders, communities, and individuals need guidance and supportive services in the prevention of marijuana use.

The American Psychological Association defines resilience as the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands (see https://dictionary.apa.org/resilience). Raising children with resiliency skills can provide them with the tools they need to manage the challenges and stresses of growing up. Resiliency can be taught and built in children and youth by helping them develop the character strengths and human connections to raise above adversity.

Resources for Building Resiliency in Children and Youth

Recovery Capital is a term used to describe the internal and external resources used to initiate and sustain recovery. Recovery Capital focuses on fostering resiliency and incorporates the strengths, supports, and services that can be accessed by individuals to support recovery. Typically, these assets are classified in three categories of capital:

  • Personal recovery capital refers to the assets an individual possesses such as physical health, employment, health insurance, access to basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.
  • Family or social recovery capital refers to family, kinship and social relationships and the willingness of these individuals to participate and support recovery.
  • Community recovery capital includes the attitudes, policies, and resources available in the community to support recovery.

Behavioral health professionals, systems, and communities develop and implement ROSC systems to prevent the expansion of behavioral health conditions, decrease harm caused by substance use and mental health disorders, and offer resources to aid individuals with behavioral health disorders and their families reach and maintain healthy and productive lives in their communities.

Resources for Recovery Capital

Pregnant and postpartum women involved with substance use and their families are priority populations for services in Florida. Women with substance use disorders often face a host of complex psychosocial and environmental issues – regardless of ethnicity or socioeconomic background. However, evidence-based treatment and recovery support can often transform the trajectory of an entire family.

Resources for Culturally Competent Practice in behavioral health

Substance use disorders continue to impact the lives of many Americans and pose a significant health risk for Floridians. The Medical Examiner’s Commission recently reported that Florida drug-related deaths increased by 4 percent between 2018 and 2019 and stimulant-related deaths followed this pattern. Cocaine-related deaths increased by 12 percent and cocaine was identified as the second most commonly found substance in drug-related deaths in the same period. Methamphetamine-related deaths increased by 45 percent and amphetamine-related deaths increased by 38 percent (FDLE, 2020).

Resources for Prevention Approaches for Individuals Impacted by Marijuana Use

Substance use disorders continue to impact the lives of many Americans and pose a significant health risk for Floridians. The Medical Examiner’s Commission recently reported that Florida drug-related deaths increased by 4 percent between 2018 and 2019 and opioid-related deaths increased 10 percent during the same period. (FDLE, 2020). While there are ongoing efforts to combat this crisis, it has affected certain segments of the population with an extra level of intensity which requires additional research and resources. Resources for Prevention Approaches for Individuals Impacted by Marijuana Use

COVID-19 has impacted many aspects of our professional and personal lives – adding stressors and uncertainty. A recent survey of adults aged 18 and older found that 40.9% of respondents reported at least one adverse mental or behavioral health condition including depression, anxiety and increase substance use (Czeisler et al., 2020).

To support Florida’s individuals, families, communities and practitioners, this collection of prevention information and resources was compiled by FADAA with support from the Florida Department of Children and Families Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health. These materials include strategies to help children and youth manage stress, prevent substance use and promote their health and well-being.
