Best Practices in Screening for Adolescent Substance Use Risk: Tools of the Trade

Description:

This webinar will focus on a variety of screening tools for adolescent substance use with the goal of supporting positive behavior change. Training content will address the purpose and process of screening for substance use risk from both a prevention and early intervention point of view. The speaker will review the most commonly used screening tools for adolescents and transitional age youth and demonstrate how the tools are administered, such as the CRAFFT, S2BI, and the AUDIT-C. Time and resources will also be provided to address participant questions about  implementing these tools.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate how to administer, score, and interpret validated alcohol and other substance use screening tools for adolescents and transitional age youth to determine level of risk.
  2. Describe the differences and similarities between various screening tools used for adolescent substance use.
  3. Identify and gain access to free materials and resources available to support health professional training on adolescent screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT).

 

This webinar is designed for behavioral health practitioners, prevention professionals, individuals serving children and youth, program managers and supervisors, and executives in behavioral health agencies, Managing Entities, and Department of Children and Families program staff.

Presented by:

Adam Musielewicz, MPA, has over 14 years of experience serving diverse communities in his home state of Colorado. Primarily under the umbrella of Public Health, Adam has occupied professional capacities in areas such as youth development, safe and affordable housing, and refugee resettlement. Adam has spent the last 8 years focused on youth substance use prevention, which included leading a county-wide coalition effort to develop and implement environmental strategies designed to address shared risk and protective factors in surrounding Northern Colorado communities. Most recently, Adam served as a Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Practice Facilitator and Trainer, supporting health and behavioral health entities with implementing the best practices of the early intervention approach. Adam maintains a certificate of intensive training in Motivational Interviewing (MI). Adam lives in Fort Collins, Colorado with his wife and two boys, and appreciates all that the mountains provide as far as outdoor activities, scenery, and serenity.
